XP Tips

Most of the tips in our 'Registry Hacks' section are XP specific, and can tweak your system performance without having to trust someone else's tweaking tool. Below are some basic tips on improving your XP system performance. All of them work in XP Pro, most work in XP Home.

These tips assume a basic understanding of the Run box, Command line, Administrative Tools sanp-ins, and other Operating System features beyond the simple point-and-click user. If your system becomes unstable after following one of these tips, don't even think about emailing me - I wasn't there to watch how you screwed it up, I can not help you now.

Report home to Microsoft

I hate it when a program crashes, and the computer wants to report it to Microsoft. If the people in Redmond were smart enough to use my report, they would have been smart enough to not make a system that keeps crashing. Turn the report option off in the Services module of Administrative Tools. Find it under 'Administrative Tools' in Control Panel, or type services.msc at the run prompt. Look for 'Error Reporting Service.' Double click on it and set the 'Startup Type' to 'Disable.' Click on the 'Stop' button to stop it now.

Next, open system properties from Win + Pause/Break. Click on the Advanced tab, then Error Reporting. Select the Disable radio button.

Stop Desttop Cleanup Wizard By default, every 60 days the XP Desktop Cleanup Wizard pops up and offers to clean up your desktop. What if you like your cluttered, messy desktop? Here's how to make the Wizard leave you alone:

1. Right click an empty space on the desktop.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Uncheck the box labeled Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard.

Turn Off Display of Zip Files as Folders

To turn off this feature in XP, do the following:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type cmd
3. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Genuine Advantage claims your windows is invalid Windows Genuine Advantage is Microsoft's not so subtle crackdown on illegal piracy of Windows XP and Microsoft Office products. Microsoft started with an ActiveX component to force owners of Windows XP to validate their version before downloading security updates. Unfortunately this particular scheme was rather easily foiled by groups on the net and workarounds appeared almost instantly including cracked files and javascript fixes. Click here for a list of tools and advice.
