WiFi Lockdown

 

1) Change the default password immediately.  If the username can be changed, so= that also.  Write it down on paper = where you can find it.  The security= issue is not someone in your home seeing the password, but someone outside your h= ome trying top hack the password.

 

2) Turn on MAC filtering for all know hosts

 

3) Limit the number of hosts allowed.  If DHCP can be turned off, do it, = add change the host’s settings to static IP addresses.  If possible, limit the range of IP addresses allowed to the number of hosts that are in the home, including PDA’s and print servers.

 

4) Turn off the SSID broadcast.  This will not stop a serious war-d= rivers with good sniffer software, but it will stop the causal neighbor with a wireless network, little wireless knowledge and even less evil intent.

 

5) Turn on whatever is the highest level of encryption available.  WPA is better and = newer than WEP, but WEP is better than nothing.&= nbsp; Use the largest bit# for the passphrase encryption, and use a long, multiword passphrase.  The int= ent is to shut out neighbors, not skilled and equipped war-drivers, who are not go= ing to be sitting in front of your house anyway.
