Remove Control Panel Icons?

QUESTION:
Is there a way that I can remove applet icons from Control Panel? There are some that I never use. Thanks! - Kelly P.

ANSWER:
The Control Panel applet files have the 3D.cpl extension (for example, the file for the Date and Time applet is TimeDate 3D.cpl and the Passwords applet is password3D.cpl). Unfortunately, not all of the file names are quite as intuitive. For exampl= e, the Add/Remove Programs file is Appwiz3D.cpl and the Regional Settings applet is Intl3D.cpl. Also, the Main3D.cpl file controls multiple icons: keyboard, fonts, mouse and printers. You'll g= et rid of all those icons if you remove this file. However, you'll find that t= he removal is only temporary; Windows will "regrow" the icons next t= ime you boot. You can, however, permanently remove third party icons. We recomm= end that you not delete the files you want to remove from Control Panel but ins= tead move them to a different location.

You can use the Gro= up Policy editor to hide specific Control Panel icons. In the Run box, type gp= edit3D.msc, and in the left pane, find the Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel node. Click it, and in= the right pane double click Hide Specified Control Panel Applets. On the Policy tab, click Enabled. Click the Show button, and click Add. Type the name of = the applet you want to hide and click OK.
