Getting children to take a break from the Internet can be tough. It gets
tougher if the computers are in the bedrooms. In general, young kids should=
n't
have that much privacy using the Internet. There are just too many dangerous
people waiting to meet children online.

It makes perfect sense to block Internet access at night when you can't
watch over them. Windows already includes a powerful tool that can do this.=
To
use it, you must log on to each computer as an administrator.

After you log on, you'll need to use Windows' Command Prompt. Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>> Co=
mmand
Prompt. At the prompt, type the following:

<span style=3D'font-size:10.=
0pt'>net

<span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'> user AccountName /t=
imes:

Replace "AccountName" with your ch=
ild's
Windows account name. Finish by appending specific times to the end of the
command. These will be the times during which your child can log onto Windo=
ws
as normal. Any time not included is restricted.

You can specify a day along with a time range. For example, use the
following to allow computer use only on Saturdays between <st1:time Hour=3D=
"9"
Minute=3D"0">9 a.m.</st1:time> and <st1:time Hour=3D"17" Minute=3D"0">5 p.m=
.</st1:time>:

<span style=3D'font-size:10.0p=
t'>net<span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'> user AccountName /t=
imes:Sa,<st1:time
Minute=3D"0" Hour=3D"9"><span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'>9AM-5PM=
</st1:time>

You can also specify a range of days. For example, use the following to
allow computer use Monday through Friday from <st1:time Hour=3D"10" Minute=
=3D"0">10
a.m.</st1:time> to <st1:time Hour=3D"22" Minute=3D"0">10 p.m.</st1:time>:<=
/p>

<span style=3D'font-size:10.0p=
t'>net<span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'> user AccountName
/times:M-F,<st1:time Minute=3D"0" Hour=3D"10"><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'>10AM-10PM</st1:time>

You can even put different schedules together. For example, use the
following to allow computer use Monday through Friday from <st1:time Hour=
=3D"10"
Minute=3D"0">10 a.m.</st1:time> to <st1:time Hour=3D"22" Minute=3D"0">10 p.=
m.</st1:time>
and on Saturdays between <st1:time Hour=3D"9" Minute=3D"0">9 a.m.</st1:time=
> and <st1:time
Hour=3D"17" Minute=3D"0">5 p.m.</st1:time>:

<span style=3D'font-size:10.0p=
t'>net<span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'> user AccountName
/times:M-F,<st1:time Minute=3D"0" Hour=3D"10"><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'>10AM-10PM</st1:time><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'>;Sa,<st1:time Minute=3D"0" Hour=3D"9=
"><span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'>9AM-5PM</st1:time>

To indicate days of the week, use the abbreviations M, T, W, Th, F, Sa and Su. To indic=
ate
times, use only whole hours. If you mix schedules, separate each with a
semicolon as in the last example.

To remove restrictions, you can use the following command:

<span style=3D'font-size:10.0p=
t'>net<span
style=3D'font-size:10.0pt'> user AccountName /<=
span
class=3DSpellE>times:ALL

If the command prompt isn't your thing, you can resort to separate softw=
are.
Programs like <a href=3D"http://www.softheap.com/newadmin.html" target=3D"_=
blank">1st
Security Agent ($49) and <a
href=3D"http://www.codework.com/bcontrol/features.htm" target=3D"_blank">Br=
owse
Control ($69) can do the job. But, they're not free.
