QUESTION:
I share an XP Home computer with several family members. The default XP log= on screen shows the names of the user accounts that have been created on the computer and lets you choose from them. I'd like to have a "hidden&quo= t; account, so the name doesn't appear there for other users to see (like the Administrator account is hidden). I know I can switch to the classic Windows logon box so we all have to type in our user names but I don't want to do t= hat. Can we keep the regular Welcome screen with the user list, and control which user names appear there? - Arvel W.

ANSWER:
You're in luck. You can edit the registry to do this. Here's how:

  1. Open your favorite registry editor.
  2. Navigate to this key: HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE= \Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserLi= st
  3. Create a new DWORD value whose name is the name of the user account you want to hide.
  4. Set the data value of the entry to 0.

Y= ou can unhide the account later by setting the value to 1.
